Our Story
Founded in 1992 by Gabriel J. Christian and Irving W. Andre, then a Canadian Associate Crown Attorney, Pont Casse Press began as a mission to center indigenous Dominican perspectives within Caribbean and Latin American literature. Their debut collaborative work, "In Search of Eden: Dominica—The Travails of a Caribbean Mini-State," laid the foundational vision for the press.
By 1999, Gabriel J. Christian released his celebrated short story collection, "Rain on a Tin Roof," followed in 2002 by an expanded edition of their inaugural work titled "In Search of Eden: Essays on Dominican History."
Over the decades, Pont Casse Press has expanded its catalog to include over twenty-four volumes covering the politics, society, and history of the Caribbean and its global diaspora. Beyond books, Andre and Christian have contributed significantly to academic discourse through essays on the rule of law, governance, and literary heritage.
In 2009, the press hosted "Caribbean Glory," a landmark tribute to the West Indian soldiers and aviators of World War II. Held at Andrews Air Force Base with support from Ambassador Glenda Morean Phillip and the West Indian American Military Members Association, the event featured Baroness Patricia Scotland, then Her Majesty’s Attorney General. Her keynote address profoundly honored the West Indian veterans, acknowledging their vital role in securing global democracy and victory.

She has performed on prestigious stages including the United Nations, Barclays Center, and Central Park SummerStage, as well as internationally at the Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival, Cartagena Jazz Festival, Ocho Rios Jazz Festival, and Creole in the Park in Dominica. Marie-Claire has also appeared at renowned venues such as Preservation Hall, Blues Alley, Smalls Jazz Club, and Joe's Pub, earning recognition for her dynamic, genre-crossing performances.
